History Thru The Lens

Welcome to my blog site!

My interests in history and photography come together in this photoblog. Featured in this blog are historical pictures such as the above photo of the RMS Olympic and her sister ship the RMS Titanic, which would prove to be the last one of them together side by side. Hopefully all who visit will enjoy it and recommend the site to their friends.

Temple of Santiago

A recent drought in Mexico lowered the Nezahualcoyotl Reservoir's depth by 82 feet, revealing the remains of a 400 year old church. The Temple of Santiago, built by monks in the mid 16th century, was eventually abandoned due to the plagues of 1773-1776. The historic structure was flooded as a result of a dam constructed in 1966.

Final Stops

From 2007 to 2010, 2500 New York City subway cars were dumped into the Atlantic Ocean for the purpose of creating an artificial coral reef for crustaceans and fish.

Once retired, cars were stripped of any loose parts and stacked aboard a barge. They were then brought to the various dumping sites off the coast from Delaware to South Carolina.

The project has enabled the coastal seafood supply to flurish as a direct result of the reef's attraction of smaller creatures for larger fish to feed on.

A 54 Year Mystery

On April 3, 1961, a Douglas DC3 similar to the one pictured, mysteriously disappeared in the Andes Mountains. Of the 24 people on board, 8 were members of Chile's Green Cross soccer team on their way home from a road game. With the wreck's recent discovery by a group of mountaineers, this 54 year aviation mystery has been solved.
