The Lonely Hearts Killers

From 1947 through 1949, Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck were believed to have killed as many as 20 women. Known as The Lonely Hearts Killers, the couple would befriend people seeking companionship via the newspapers, eventually killing and robbing them. As a result of their being convicted for only one of the murders, Fernandez and Beck were both executed in the electric chair at New York's Sing Sing Prison on March 8, 1951.

Old Meets New

Photographer William England snapped this photograph of the Niagara Suspension Bridge in 1859. Viewed as an engineering marvel in its' time, the structure not only accommodated the modern trains of the era, but also the old horse and buggy traffic, as seen on the lower level beneath the tracks.

The Iwo Jima Memorial

In September 1954, workmen begin erecting the Iwo Jima Memorial, located just outside of Arlington National Cemetery. Originally cast in Brooklyn, NY, the massive statues were transported on large flatbed trailers down Interstate 95 to Arlington, VA.

New York vs Philadelphia

With the arrival of this year's World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Yankees, I found the above image rather appropriate for the occasion. The scene is the Polo Grounds in New York on October 9, 1913 after game 3 of the World Series where the Philadelphia A's defeated the New York Giants by a score of 8-2.

Fort Ticonderoga

Fort Ticonderoga is an 18th Century fort built in 1755 - 1758 near the south end of Lake Champlain in upstate New York. The site was strategically important during the 18th Century colonial conflicts between Great Britain and France, and to a lesser extent during the American Revolutionary War. A popular tourist attraction today and a museum, it was designated a National Historic Landmark on October 9, 1960. It would eventually be placed on the National Registry of Historic Places on October 15, 1966.
