A Spy Story With Legs

In this rare undated picture, Marina Lee appears as no more than the ballerina star she was during the World War II years. However, recently declassified papers from British Intelligence present her otherwise. As a German secret agent with striking beauty, Lee was somehow able to infiltrate Allied Defense offices, stealing battle plans of attack and turning them over to the Nazis.

Her accomplishments are credited with contributing to the fall of Norway to the Nazis early in the war. Intelligence from the French included the entry: Very nice legs.

Somber Discoveries

Near the Buchenwald concentration camp on May 5, 1945, US soldiers discovered thousands of articles taken by the Nazis from their victims. The items included such things as watches, gold fillings, and wedding rings (shown above); all grim reminders of the holocaust.

This picture taken in 1922 shows a woman removing a flask from her Russian boot.

Note the swastikas embedded in the floor design. The swastika was once considered a good luck symbol in many cultures including Native Americans. The Nazis adopted it as their symbol in WWII, forever reminding the world of the evil it had unjustly come to represent.

Pope Pius XII

Despite John Cornwell's criticism of Pius XII in his 1999 book 'Hitler's Pope', Pius XII was credited by the Jewish community as having saved more Jews from Nazi persecution than any other people or institutions. Hiding Jews in Catholic churches, and issuing false baptism certificates are but two of the methods utilized by the Pope to ensure their safety. Some Jewish scholars estimate that from 1941 to 1944, Pope Pius XII may have saved as many as 860,000 Jews.
