They Served With Honor

A letter written by Elaine Harmon, part of the Women Air Force Service Pilots during World War II, stating her desire to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery, in Silver Spring, Md, Feb. 24, 2016. The Army has denied Harmon's family's request for her to be buried there, saying the unit was not technically active duty, but some lawmakers have introduced legislation that would allow it. In this letter written by Elaine Harmon, a WWII female pilot, she states her wishes to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Because of an Army policy barring WWII women pilots from being buried at Arlington, Harmon's ashes remain in a closet in her home while her family battles to change the policy. Harmon died last April at the age of 95.
