Among those who lost their lives that day was Davy Crockett, an American pioneer, soldier, trapper, explorer, and Congress man.
Jerry Garcia of the Greatful Dead, stands at the intersection of Haight and Ashbury Streets in San Francisco in 1966. Home to 150,000 hippies during the counterculture revolution of the 60's, several of Garcia's band members resided in a commune on Ashbury Street.
Miss America 1922, Mary Katherine Campbell, is pictured above. She was the only woman in the pageant's history to win the title twice, the second being in 1923. The first Miss America Pageant was held in 1921.
The CIA recently admitted recovering a sunken Russian K-129 submarine in a top secret salvage operation in 1974. The vessel had sunk on March 11, 1968 northwest of Hawaii. An attempt to raise the sub failed when it broke in half, however a portion managed to be salvaged. At a recent ceremony, the United States turned over to the Russians recovered materials from the submarine. Included in these was a video of a secret burial at sea for 6 crewmen found on board the raised portion. In 1929, the St Valentine's Day Massacre would become the most famous of the 200 murders in the city of Chicago between 1927 and 1931. Members of notorious gangster Al Capone's gang, disguised as policemen, raided the headquarters of Bug's Moran's North Side Gang. The seven men were lined up against the garage wall and brutally murdered with sub-machine guns.
Near the Buchenwald concentration camp on May 5, 1945, US soldiers discovered thousands of articles taken by the Nazis from their victims. The items included such things as watches, gold fillings, and wedding rings (shown above); all grim reminders of the holocaust.
This famous picture showing the Granville-Paris Express after it had overrun the buffer stop at the Gare Montparnasse in Paris on October 22, 1895. Despite the giant locomotive's 33 foot fall onto the station concourse, the only fatality was a woman killed by falling concrete.
This picture taken in 1948, shows actor Ronald Reagan, then a liberal Democrat, campaigning on the radio for presidential candidate Harry Truman. Reagan would eventually switch his party affiliation and go on to become the 33rd governor of the state of California, and eventually the 40th President of the United States.
On June 19, 2009, I posted this photograph taken on September 2, 1945 of the signing of Japan's Instrument of Surrender. The ceremony took place aboard the USS Missouri.
