Anne Frank (May 1942)

Annelies Marie Frank was born on June 12, 1929 in Frankfurt am Main in Weimar Germany. During her life, she would become one of the most recognized Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Known for her creative writing, her diary became one of the world's most read books. Anne Frank died of typhus at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in late March 1945 at the age of 15.

1918 World series

Babe Ruth, starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, hits in the 1918 World Series against the Chicago Cubs. Ruth is the only starting pitcher in World Series history to bat other than ninth in the batting order. Boston won the series 4-2, which would be their last World Series title until 2004.

Pan Am 103

A portion of the nose section of Pan American Flight 103 is pictured after it was brought down by a bomb on December 21, 1988 in the village of Lockerbie, Scotland. 270 people lost their lives that day including many college students who were returning home from a field trip. A Libyan intelligence agent was convicted of planting a bomb on board the giant Boeing 747-121. Despite being sentenced to 27 years in prison, the criminal was granted early release recently on compassionate grounds. He reportedly is suffering from a terminal illness.

The Hindenburg Disaster

On May 6, 1937, the German air ship LZ129 Hindenburg was approaching the mooring station at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in Lakehurst, New Jersey when it all of a sudden burst into flames. The ship was destroyed within one minute, killing 35 of the 97 on board and 1 person on the ground. The actual cause of the accident remains unknown.

The Alamo

In this photo, The Alamo in San Antonio, Texas is shown in the 1860's. The famous slogan 'Remember The Alamo' is in reference to the Battle of The Alamo on March 6, 1836. Mexican troops led by General Santa Anna defeated the Texian soldiers defending the former Roman Catholic mission.

Among those who lost their lives that day was Davy Crockett, an American pioneer, soldier, trapper, explorer, and Congress man.

Today, The Alamo is a museum which attracts thousands of tourists yearly.

Haight Ashbury

Jerry Garcia of the Greatful Dead, stands at the intersection of Haight and Ashbury Streets in San Francisco in 1966. Home to 150,000 hippies during the counterculture revolution of the 60's, several of Garcia's band members resided in a commune on Ashbury Street.

Mary Katherine Campbell

Miss America 1922, Mary Katherine Campbell, is pictured above. She was the only woman in the pageant's history to win the title twice, the second being in 1923. The first Miss America Pageant was held in 1921.

Cold War Secrecy

The CIA recently admitted recovering a sunken Russian K-129 submarine in a top secret salvage operation in 1974. The vessel had sunk on March 11, 1968 northwest of Hawaii. An attempt to raise the sub failed when it broke in half, however a portion managed to be salvaged. At a recent ceremony, the United States turned over to the Russians recovered materials from the submarine. Included in these was a video of a secret burial at sea for 6 crewmen found on board the raised portion. Above is an undated picture of a Soviet sailor which was developed from a camera found on board the K-129.

A Not So Happy Valentine

In 1929, the St Valentine's Day Massacre would become the most famous of the 200 murders in the city of Chicago between 1927 and 1931. Members of notorious gangster Al Capone's gang, disguised as policemen, raided the headquarters of Bug's Moran's North Side Gang. The seven men were lined up against the garage wall and brutally murdered with sub-machine guns.
